My Story
What was your path to becoming a mental health counselor?
My path to becoming a therapist has been quite an interesting journey. After spending my 20s in quite a "colorful" manner, I ended up redirecting and focusing my life on helping others. Mentorship was always something lacking in my life; this has motivated me to fill that void for those out there lacking support.
What should someone know about working with you?
The process of working with me is relatively simple. Let's set up a consultation call and see if it's a good fit; if we both agree, we can set up our intake assessment and get started. Therapy with me often looks solution-focused after the rapport-building phase (e.g., journaling assignments, mindfulness training, harm reduction, etc.). I hold my clients accountable for the changes they want to see in their lives, which often looks like accountability checks. I enjoy working with clients struggling with existential questioning, on the path to recovery, integrating spirituality into their lifestyles, and adjustment issues.
How do your own core values shape your approach to care?
My core values have essentially created my theoretical approach toward therapy. Authenticity is a value that has taken precedence over many others as I find that authenticity invites authenticity; when I am my most authentic self as a therapist, it helps and invites my clients to be open and honest about their stories. Without dropping the masks that we've learned to wear in society, change is impossible.
What are you most excited about within the evolving mental health landscape?
Without change comes stagnancy and the mental health industry has no business being stagnant. Psychedelic-assisted therapies are very intriguing to me, especially the idea of being blended with more traditional trauma treatments, such as EMDR and brainspotting. I am interested in seeing where this industry goes and what help it can provide to our society.
Dog assisted therapy?
This is Mabel. She sits along side me in most therapy sessions to support clients with anxious features. She is a trained Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) that is trained in disrupting repetitive behaviors, i.e. knee tapping, jittery hands, rocking/swaying. She serves as a grounding tool to help stay in the moment and is utilized for bilateral stimulation within EMDR sessions.
